For deep-fried chicken wings at home, simply baked in your oven, the secret ingredient is baking powder. This is by far the easiest recipe for oven bake delicious wings at home. They are baked from frozen! It takes some time of course. But these are the crispiest chicken wings and they’re just perfect. Once baked, toss them with your favorite wing sauce. Ingredients for chicken wings recipe

  • Frozen Chicken Wings – This recipe is written for one 40-ounce bag of grocery store frozen chicken wings. The recipe can easily be doubled or tripled for a crowd.
  • Baking Powder – There is a science behind this. Baking powder (not baking soda) coated wings mimic deep fried chicken wings. The skin becomes incredibly crispy perfection like with deep frying.
  • Frank’s RedHot Sauce – I’ve only tested this recipe with Frank’s hot sauce. I don’t think there’s a substitute.
  • Butter – A little melted butter goes a long way to make these wings taste like your favorite takeout.
  • Honey – The sweetness of the honey helps to round out the spicy flavors in the sauce.
  • Garlic Powder – I love garlicky flavor with my hot wings. You could also use fresh garlic cloves instead of garlic powder if you prefer.
  • Red Pepper Flakes – I wanted to mimic the flavor of hot honey. You could substitute the flakes with a 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Or leave it out if you want a more mild sauce.
  • Blue Cheese Dressing – I love dipping my wings and a side of celery sticks (and/or carrot sticks) in blue cheese. But you can use Ranch dressing if you prefer.

Instructions for crispy chicken wings

Your oven is doing most of the work for this chicken wing recipe. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper. Place an oven-safe wire rack on top. Add the baking powder to the bag of wings and shake well to combine. Evenly space the wings on top of the metal cooking rack. Bake the wing for 80 minutes. Increase the temperature to 400 degrees F and flip the wings over. Cook for an additional 20 minutes. Flip them over again and cook for an additional 20 minutes, or longer if you want the wings super crispy and browned.

Be sure to check the temperature of your wings. Chicken wings are safe to eat once they reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees F. Toss the wings in a large bowl with your favorite sauce. Or use my buffalo wing sauce recipe. For full list of ingredients, detailed instructions and free printable recipe card, keep scrolling to the bottom of this post.

Pro tips

  • These chicken wings are baked from frozen, so plan ahead. Once your wings are coated with the baking powder, the oven does all the work for you!
  • For best results, spray oven rack with cooking spray.
  • Also be sure and arrange the baking powder coated chicken wings in a single layer on the oven rack.
  • Wings are very forgiving. If you like really golden brown and crispy skin, just keep baking!
  • Bake several recipes of wings and toss each sheet pan in different sauces. These baked wings are customizable for anyone.

Hi! I found your recipe on pinterest. GREAT wing recipe! Probably the best I’ve ever made. My family all loved them. We used the baking powder trick and baked at your temp but used my sauce recipe (everyone has their own perfect sauce right?) Thank you! My husband thanks you, too. The only problem is next time I think I have to buy more wings (I bough the 4lb bag). Haha.

I just made this tonight and they turned out pretty good I would make it again! Didn’t have maple syrup so I left that ingredient out. The baking powder really did crisped the wings!

I want to try this recipe but it says to cook for 80 minutes. That sounds like a long time. Is 8 minutes correct?

I love chicken wings, but mine always come out soggy! I can’t wait to try this version. If they’re as crispy as they look in your photos, I’ll be a happy lady. Thanks so much for sharing!

Idk what I did wrong but all I could taste was the baking powder even with the sauce on it it was too powdery the texture was weird I don’t know if I added to much

I’m sorry that happened to you. You may have added too much. I make sure to shake off any excess that sticks (because it will sometimes stick in clumps when the wings are still frozen) before putting them in the oven. These wings have gotten so many positive reviews. Maybe you’ll consider trying again? Thanks for the feedback.

I know this is a year later, but the flavor could be if your baking powder is not aluminum free. If you try again try that!

Great recipe, I didn’t have garlic chili sauce, so I used 1 tbsp minced garlic and 1/2 tsp chili powder and we thought it came out great. Thanks

No, you can use fresh. But you’ll need to reduce the baking time. The most important part is making sure the wings are baked to 165 degrees F. I’d probably start checking fresh wing after about 30-40 minutes in the oven. Hope that helps.

These came out so great! Ours were cooked through around 55 minutes; so I put them under the broiler until they were brown and they came out delicious.
