Dried Beef Dip was also known as a chipped beef cheese ball during my growing up years. It was one of the favorite dishes to always show up at a holiday party. I was feeling nostalgic for it so decided to publish this easy recipe for maybe new generations to discover and enjoy. It’s a really economical and easy appetizer to make.

Ingredients for dried beef dip recipe

  • Cream Cheese – One block (8 oz) of softened cream cheese for one recipe of this dip. The dip can easily be doubled or tripled for a larger crowd. I prefer using full fat cream cheese for this dip.
  • Dried Beef – One can of Armour brand dried beef equals 2.25 ounces. You are welcome to use other brands like Buddig Beef.
  • Sour Cream – Helps to make this dip nice and creamy and adds that signature sour cream flavor.
  • Green Onions – Fresh green onions pair so nicely with the salty flavors in this dip.
  • Chives – Some recipes for dried beef dip use fresh dill. But I prefer how well fresh chives pair with the green onions (scallions).
  • Garlic Powder – You could use one clove of minced fresh garlic if you prefer, but I like the convenience of garlic powder. Plus the flavor is a little more mellow. You could also use onion powder.
  • Black Pepper – Extra zip and flavor for your dip.
  • Worcestershire Sauce – Even more flavor and you definitely don’t need to add any additional amount of salt to this dip!
  • Dippers – Serve with your favorite brand of crackers (mine is Ritz) or bagel chips. Fresh vegetables like celery sticks and red or green peppers. In a bread bowl with pumpernickel bread cubes for dipping.

Instructions

Allow the cream cheese to soften. Finely chop the dried beef. Soak the green onions in cold water. Dry them with paper towels. Remove and discard about the top half of the greens and chop off and remove the root ends. Chop the remaining green onions into thin slices.

In a medium bowl, stir together the room temperature cream cheese, dried beef, green onions, sour cream, chives, garlic powder, black pepper and Worcestershire sauce until well combined. You can use a spatula or a hand-held electric mixer.

Cover the bowl with an airtight lid or plastic wrap. Allow the ingredients to harmonize their flavors, so refrigerate for at least one hour before serving. Dip can be made one day in advance.

Pro tips

Soak the green onions in cold water – this makes them more crisp and easier to chop. Also be sure and dry them before chopping.

Mix the dip in a bowl that has an airtight lid – this makes for easier storage in the refrigerator.

You can make this dip into a cheese ball. Transfer the dip into the middle of a sheet of plastic wrap. Gather the wrap around the dip and twist to form a ball. Refrigerate for at least one hour to allow it to firm up. Roll the cheeseball in additional chopped dried beef and chopped chives to garnish before serving.

Make hot dried beef dip. You can easily turn this creamy dip into a hot dip recipe. Spread the dip into an oven-safe small baking dish (or pie plate). Top the dip with chopped pecans if desired for some added crunch! Bake at 350 degrees F for about 20 minutes.

Storage directions

Store any leftover dip in an airtight container for up to three days. Or store any leftover dip in the freezer (also in an airtight container or freezer safe plastic bag) for up to two months.

Serving suggestions

My personal favorite dippers for this delicious dip are Ritz crackers. It’s also delicious with fresh celery and red pepper.

For a party or game day, set this dip out with favorite snacks –  The Best Beer Nuts, Vegetable Pizza and Air Fryer Pigs in a Blanket.

I used to live near a deli that made something similar, served in a bread bowl so you could dip bread in it. I’m 2 hours away now and can’t run and pick some up when I want. I can’t wait to make this and see if it tastes the same!
